–F Andres Nocioni didn’t end up participating in the FIBA World Championship for Argentina. After looking at his MRI, the Sixers invoked a clause in his contract forbidding him to play because the team said his sprained left ankle, which he injured in a July 31 workout with the Argentine national team, hadn’t healed sufficiently to allow him to play without risking further injury. Nocioni, who was apparently going to try to practice two days before the tournament began, announced he wouldn’t play after the Sixers told him to “stop all basketball and impact activity” until the start of training camp.
–The Sixers will hold media day Sept. 27, with camp starting the next day at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. They open the regular season Oct. 27 against the visiting Miami Heat.
QUOTE TO NOTE: “Everyone has an ego — some are bigger than others. My personality’s not one to stay down very long. My pity party lasted about a half-hour and I was fine after that. Nothing’s going to keep me down. It’s a positive because it’s a mentor and one of my best friends.” — GM Ed Stefanski, on his reaction to learning the Sixers had hired Rod Thorn, who was his boss with the Nets, to succeed him as team president.
